Pregnancy Decision Counselling

Making a decision to have an abortion for an unwanted pregnancy can be difficult. We respect your decision and are here to support, comfort, and guide you through the decision-making process to ensure you make the best decision for you.

If you are experiencing an unwanted pregnancy and want to talk to someone before making a decision, you can schedule an appointment for decision counselling only.

An experienced, knowledgeable and non-judgmental counsellor will help you to look at your life situation, values and practices, as well as those of others in your life, your career, relationships with others, and spiritual or religious concerns that may be impacting your decision.

You will also be offered printed resources and free counselling services to assist you with your decision-making process.

Preoperative Abortion Counselling

All patients of Brampton Women’s Clinic choosing to have an abortion will meet with a counsellor before the procedure.

During this time, the counsellor will discuss your options with you, review the abortion process, and offer contraceptive counselling to help you make the best and most informed decision for you.

After counselling, you will be asked to change into your long t-shirt or gown that you had brought with you. You will then be seated in the preoperative waiting room.

From the preoperative waiting area, a registered nurse will take you to the examination room, where an ultrasound will be done to determine how far along your pregnancy may be.

If you have chosen to have a surgical abortion:

The entire procedure takes 5-8 minutes. You are not put to sleep for your surgical abortion. You will be offered an intravenous (IV) painkiller and sedative to help minimize discomfort and anxiety during the procedure.

During the surgical abortion, your nurse will monitor your comfort level and vital signs while providing support and guidance through the procedure. Most women are able to carry a normal conversation with their nurse during this time.

If you have chosen to have a medical abortion:

You will meet with a nurse and doctor to have a vaginal ultrasound done, testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and have any additional questions answered by your doctor before receiving your medication. No instruments are used.

Post-Abortion/D&C Counselling

Every woman is different and may experience different feelings and emotions after their abortion. Most women, feel a sense of relief after their abortion as they have overcome a difficult moment in their life.

However, in the days and weeks to come some women may experience a sense of loss or feelings of sadness, anger or guilt. We are human and it is natural to have these feelings after making a difficult life decision. It can help to share these feelings with someone close to you that you can trust.

If you experience any emotional distress following your abortion or dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure, please call our clinic to talk to our counsellor. You matter and we are just a phone call away.
